| Marcus Fenix | Dominic Santiago | Augustus Cole | Damon Baird |
| Marcus Fenix has seen war ever since his teenage years in the COG army. When the locust emerged from the depths of the earth he was sent to the front lines immediately. He and his best friend Dom were defending Ephyra, the capital of the COG, from the locust incursion, when Marcus's dad sent a distress beacon. Marcus and Dom immediately rushed over to his house and fought the attacking locust, only to defeat them and find no trace of Marcus's dad. Soon after Ephyra fell to the locust horde, Marcus was sent to the worst military prison in Jacinto, the new capitol city, named the Slab. After 9 years of being in prison, Dom busted Marcus out of jail and they rejoined Delta squad in order to save humanity from the locust. | Dom is a dedicated soldier, having lost his wife and 3 children to the locust, he hates the locust with a bitter passion, and is very loyal to his fellow squadmates, | A former thrashball player nicknamed the Cole Train,(the equivalent of football) Cole shows the same arrogance and charisma on the battlefield. Having given up his career to serve in the army, his loyalty and comradery are something one would not find in most gears. His most famous quote is "The Cole Train runs on whole grain baby,WHoooooooooooo" | Baird is a skilled mechanic and enigineer, and is also quite good in combat too. His cocky and somewhat cynical personality annoys the other members of Delta squad sometimes. Ultimately though, Delta squad would be nowhere without him. |
| Col. Victor Hoffman | Chairman Prescott | Anya Stroud | Clayton Carmine |
| The former minister of defense in the COG, he now commands Delta squad, and is a textbook soldier who demands lyalty and sacrifice from his men. | The supreme commander in chief of the COG, Prescott will sacrifice anything or go to any measure to assure humanity's survival as a species. | A former comms officer turned gear, Anya knows she has to sacrifice her civilian life to serve in the army, despite a loss of hope and a growing relationship with Marcus. | Clay is a rookie, in every which way, shape, and form. He isn't as weak or generally inexperienced as his 2 brothers who served in Delta Squad and died. Clay knows deep down that he has to redeem the Carmine family name and avenge the deaths of his brothers at the hands of the locust. |
The Gears of War series takes place on a fictional Earth-like planet named Sera . The planet had a history of conflict that took Sera to the brink of destruction. This shocked the people into a rejection of their destructive ways, leading to a golden age. Although most conflict was solved peacefully, civil liberties and crime remained as troublesome social issues. A golden age of culture, science, and the arts[1] ensued, yet one problem stood prominent above the rest: energy. Sera's sources of petroleum and nuclear fuel were not sufficient to meet the global demand. Imulsion - with its promise of near limitless energy - was thought to be the solution to mankind's great need.[2] Humans discovered liquid Imulsion, which flows underground, and became a main power source. The value of Imulsion led to the Pendulum Wars, in which the Coalition of Ordered Governments and the Union of Independent Republics fought for control of the Imulsion. After 79 years fighting, COG finally defeated UIR by their new weapon, Hammer Of Dawn. Shortly after making peace, however, the humans were attacked across the planet by the Locust, a race of beings that dug their way out from underground. Much of humanity was wiped out during the first Locust attack, otherwise known as "Emergence Day," and the remaining humans gathered their numbers on Jacinto Plateau, its granitic ground is the only place that Locust could not dig through. The humans that could not make it became known as the "Stranded," and took shelter among the ruins. Out of desperation, the COG employed a "scorched earth" policy by firing orbital lasers across the surface of the planet to deny the Locust any spoils of war. The COG forces and the Locust continued to battle, each side desiring the complete destruction of the other. The campaign mode of the series has focused on the character of Marcus Fenix, a COG soldier formerly imprisoned for abandoning his post during the early Locust attacks to save his father, Adam Fenix, a key scientist studying the Locust. At the start of the first game, Marcus is rescued from an abandoned prison facility by his best friend, Dominic "Dom" Santiago, who had lost his wife Maria during the Locust attacks and has been looking for her since. Marcus, after his rescue, is readmitted to the COG force and promoted to lead Delta Squad. They are later joined by Augustus Cole, a star "thrashball" player before Emergence Day, and Damon Baird, the squad's mechanic. They fight their way through various settings on Sera including the underground world in order to destroy the Hollow, the Locust tunnels, with a weapon called the Lightmass Bomb. In the second game, Delta Squad and the entire COG army launch a massive invasion of the Hollow to destroy the Locust and the Lambent with much of the game taking place in the Hollow.
Gears of War 3 begins as Chairman Prescott unexpectedly arrives on the Sovereign. Prescott informs Marcus he needs to relay important information to the ship's captain. The Lambent shortly launch a surprise attack on the ship during which Prescott is mortally wounded. Before dying, Prescott gives Marcus an encrypted data disc and reveals that his father, Adam Fenix, is still alive but captive on Azura. Marcus, Dom, Cole and Baird fight their way to the Anvil Gate Fortress, where Colonel Hoffman possesses the necessary equipment to decrypt Precott's disc. Upon arriving at Anvil Gate, Marcus and his comrades assist Hoffman's soldiers in repelling a Lambent assault. Upon further analysis of the disc's content, Marcus learns that Azura is protected by man-made hurricane generators, making the island only accessible by a submarine. Marcus and his comrades successfully find a submarine but require Imulsion to fuel it. They first venture to an abandoned town called Mercy, where they are quickly overrun by the Lambent Humans. Dom sacrifices himself to create an explosion, destroying the overwhelming Lambent force and saving the group. Demoralized, they are forced to continue their search for fuel in the city of Char after their truck runs out of gas. The ruined city is inhabited by several 'Stranded' civilians who are led by Griffin (voiced by Ice-T). Despite his dislike for the Coalition of Ordered Governments, Griffin reluctantly tasks Marcus to recover a supply of imulsion. After acquiring the fuel, they are attacked by the Locust Horde, led by Queen Myrrah. Griffin's forces sustain heavy casualties in the ensuing battle, but the Gears are ultimately able to escape and fuel their submarine. Marcus finally arrives at Azura only to discover it is really a sanctuary and resort for Sera's most elite and powerful individuals. Adam contacts the Gears and reveals he is being held captive atop a hotel in Azura. Marcus battles through waves of hostiles before finding his father. Adam quickly explains that he has created a device that will release an energy wave capable of eradicating all Lambent and Locust life forms on Sera. Marcus and his comrades defend Adam from the Locust and Lambent. They finally battle and defeat Myrrah, who unsuccessfully attempts to destroy Adam's machine. Adam explains that he had to infect himself with Lambent cells in order to test his machine. As the machine begins to pulsate with energy, Adam bids his son farewell before crumbling into a pile of dust. Myrrah rises from the rubble and begins insulting Adam. Marcus stabs and kills Myrrah with Dom's commando knife. Shortly afterwards, the machine emits a blue wave of energy that sweeps across Sera, destroying the Locust and Lambent forces. The scene transitions back to Marcus, who is mourning over his losses. He is comforted by Anya, who assures him that Adam's sacrifice has guaranteed humanity a future.
